Don’t poke the Giant. You may not want to be on the receiving end of ‘his’ temper. Being the comedian that gets everyone laughing isn’t a good thing when it’s at the expense of someone else. What you think is a funny story, may be a stressful and emotional touchy subject for others. Show a little compassion even though you don’t understand what’s going on. You’ll gather more attention and more appreciation by being understanding and kind.

If you’re the one hosting the party this year, you are responsible for making everyone feel comfortable. But that doesn’t mean you’re the scheduled entertainment, so don’t feel that you have to be on stage lifting everyone’s spirit too. You can provide the stage, but everyone else has to make the choice on their own to entertain themselves.
This time of year isn’t easy for everyone. Part of helping others feel comfortable at your gathering is showing them compassion and helping them control their own emotions. Letting them know you noticed their struggle is all you need to do. Don’t make them share their story if they don’t want to. But let them know you’re available if they want to talk discreetly and in total confidence. No matter what, don’t be the town crier with their story. You’ll only make things worse!
