Keep your eye on the prize, but don’t ignore what you have. Being too focused can cause you to miss the important things in life that you can’t get back. A photo or video cannot replace being there. Set your priorities, do what you must, but make sure the ones you love are not the cost of your success. It will be a hollow victory otherwise.
Setting goals are important for everyone. But working toward them with blinders on will defeat your purpose from the very beginning. Everyone wants to stand up proud and scream “I did it”, but if there’s no one there to hear it, or to share it with, then your triumph will have no value.
Everything in life needs balance. Too much of anything, even if it’s something good for you, can be toxic and detrimental to your life. Nothing is worth the cost of those you love. Don’t lose them over your blind ambition.
Remember to take time during the day to enjoy those close to you. Remember it’s not the amount of time, but the quality of time which is important. An hour for dinner in front of the TV is not quality time. An hour at the dinner table, sharing stories and talking about the day will improve your life in more ways than one.
Turn off the phone, stop texting and set aside at least one hour each night to be with your loved ones. Give them the respect of actually being “there” with them. Not 100 miles away on the next text, or stuck in that spreadsheet that maybe causing you fits today. That new contract can’t give you a hug and make you feel loved.
Everyone needs down time. It clears the cobwebs, opens the doors to inspiration and allows new ideas to flow into your thinking process. And you never know where those ideas will come from. A child’s story about their day, a partners tale of how they got home through traffic, a siblings recount of a game on the field; all will project images into your mind and potentially show you the way across the cavernous gorge that lay before you.
Reach for the prize and keep an eye on your ultimate goal. Take some time away from the view so you can also keep yourself in the here and now with those who mean the most to you. You’ll want them to be there with you when you stand on the podium and proclaim success. You might even need their help to attain that trophy in the first place. It’s all about balance and respect. Make sure you’re using both wisely today.
