It’s Ok To Cry

In today’s world we are often overwhelmed with self-help advocates telling us to be happy. Chose happiness and everything will be fine. And when we fail at walking that path, we think something is wrong with our view. Or feel we’re not good enough or spiritual enough or mentally healthy enough within ourselves that we can live up to that talk and be happy. Which only makes things worse.

It would be nice if life were that easy, that we could simply chose to ignore the hurt. But in reality we all face challenges that we can’t always be happy about. We can’t ignore that part of our existence. Yet we don’t have to dwell in the moment and make it worse either. This is yet another example of how balance is what we’re here to accomplish. What’s In A Number and Name?

This weekend I saw several posts on social media talking about today’s full moon and the message behind the moon falling on 2-22 (222). These posts discuss the message of the date in terms of Angel Numerology by Doreen Virtue. Sharing the message that the date indicates:
“Trust that everything is working out exactly as it’s supposed to, with Divine blessings for everyone involved. Let go and have faith.”

I’ll be quite honest, I’ve always had an issue with this method of numerology, because it doesn’t focus on the uniqueness of numbers. Which is very important when you’re talking about a date in numerology. Every year has a 2-22 (222), whither or not it has a full moon or not. So the message is the same every year on this date. Keeping An Annual Resolution

Every year, people around the world create a resolution for the coming months. Most of them deal with change. Losing weight, exercise more, eating better, many things to work on the self and often on their appearance. But few people keep those annual resolutions.

Most of these resolutions miss the point for implementing the goal they’re trying to achieve. If you want real change in your life, start with changing your thinking. One of the best ways to do that, is to create a daily affirmation. Or in this case, an annual motto.

I’ve been creating an annual motto for decades. But I’ve been tracking those mottoes since 2001. I keep them here on the Quotes page of the blog. Now it’s time for the new motto for this year.

My 2016 Motto:
I let go of worry and trust the Divine will care for me and my family. I am filled with prosperity for financial and healthy abundance.

The Celtic Holiday Of Lugh Under The Blue Moon

Tonight in the Northern Hemisphere many Pagans will be celebrating the 1st harvest festival of the season, Lughnasadh, also known as Lammas. In the Southern Hemisphere Pagans are celebrating Imbog.

This is an exciting time for Pagans. As the sun sets on July 31st Northern Pagans will honor the Sun and his blessings upon the gardens and fields.  Lughnasadh is known as a Fire Festival and celebrates the Celtic hero Lugh as the Sun God who saved Ireland from its oppressors. Freeing the people from slavery and ensuring the land would always be fertile and abundant.

In the Southern Hemisphere, Imbolg can be seen as a celebration of the return of the Sun or “the return of the light from the dark of winter”. It is also associated with the slow return of spring (in this case early spring), when new life is formed. This makes the holiday one of the Fertility festivals for the new season.

But tonight we complement these observances under a special event, the arrival of a Blue Moon!

A Blue Moon occurs when a full moon falls within a single month twice. For July 2015, the first full moon fell on July 1st. Today on July 31st, we’ll once again see the full moon in the evening sky. Technically the Moon hit its full phase at 6:46am eastern U.S. time. In the world of energy, the moon’s effects can be felt 3 days prior to its official phase and 3 days after. And of course the closer you are to the ‘official’ phase time, the stronger the energy will be.

Keep in mind however, that the ancients who lived by the moon didn’t have the luxury of Naval Observatory and precision clocks the way we do today. For them, the official time was sunset when Grandmother Moon bathed Mother Earth with her loving glow.

In some pagan traditions the phases of the moon represent the transition of knowledge within the Triple Goddess. The quarter moons representing the Maiden Goddess, the New Moon the Mother Goddess, the Full Moon the Grand Mother Goddess (which maybe one reason we refer to the moon as “Grandmother Moon”). The Blue Moon then is seen as the transition of the Grandmother or Crone to the Divine level of existence. She becomes an expression of the evolution of wisdom, as well as an example of the circle of life. She moves from a tangible wise old Crone to a spiritual energy within the Divine force of the universe. Continue reading →

I saw this on a poster recently. It was talking about the stress and strain of being online and drowning in social media for kids and even some adults. How these new mediums of communication can  impact friendships and relationships.

Fake friends believe in rumors, real friends believe in you.

Some of you probably don’t know that my partner Garrett​ and I met online in an old AOL chat room. As soon as word got out that we were “seeing each other”, the online drama queens started their efforts to spread rumors to break us up.

It didn’t work, obviously. Because we talk. We talk a lot. We tell each other everything! Absolutely everything. And because we respect each other, we’re open, honest and trust each other implicitly. Continue reading →

Pixie, leprechaun, faerie, brownie, sprite are all terms for mystical supernatural beings, thought to be helpful or harmful to people. These variations in name are often attributed to different cultures of the world using different languages to describe the same thing or similar mystical beings. From the Huldufólk in Iceland to the Tuatha Dé Danann in Ireland, and the Manitou of Native Americans, these are apparently intelligent entities that live unseen beside us. Faeries, Pixies and Sprites are generally small magikal beings that live amongst nature and are considered helpful when treated with respect. Brownies, Elves, and Leprechauns are larger beings that live in their own villages or mystical communities away from humans populations. Marriages around the world have a great many traditions. One of my favorites involves The Irish Claddagh Ring, which is one of the most widely known traditions around the world. The ring incorporates a set of hands representing friendship, holding a heart which represents love, and a crown on top of the heart to represent loyalty. It originated in the Irish fishing village of Claddagh, located just outside the old city walls of Galway, now part of Galway City.

According to Irish author Colin Murphy, the way in which a Claddagh ring was worn describes the wearer’s relationship status:

  • On the right hand with the point of the heart toward the fingertips, the wearer is single and may be looking for love.
  • On the right hand with the point of the heart toward the wrist, the wearer is in a relationship.
  • On the left hand with the point of the heart toward the fingertips, the wearer is engaged.
  • On the left hand with the point of the heart toward the wrist, the wearer is married.

The first records of production put the creation of Claddagh in the 17th Century. But the ring was not named the “Claddagh ring” until after the 1840s. There are several written accounts of the origins of the ring, each associate its creation with a famous Irish jeweler. None of which are particularly romantic and only one that I’d call interesting, but still not romantic. Continue reading →

New And Old Tarot Traditions

Today I saw an interesting picture on Facebook and it got me thinking about traditions. When it comes to the Tarot, there is a wide range of old traditions for how to keep the cards, how to use them, and who’s permitted to touch them. Added to those old “rules” are new concepts that have become common place and considered to be new traditions. But there’s no one single definitive or authoritative list of these ‘rules’. And some of these existing concepts even contradict each other. Here’s a short list from around the world as an example.

  • Keep your cards in a pine box.
  • Wrap your cards in silk or cotton.
  • Sleep with your cards under your pillow.
  • Never let anyone else touch your cards.
  • Only the querent should touch your cards at the time of their reading.
  • Always purify your deck in sunlight.
  • Only purify your deck in moonlight.
  • Sit the deck in a plate of sea salt to purify it.
  • Light a candle or incense before a reading.
  • Lay all your readings out on a pine board.
  • Always face east when doing a reading.
  • Always face your querent.
  • Shuffle and cut the deck three times to the left.
  • Don’t shuffle, cut once to the right.
  • Have only the querent shuffle.
  • Have only the reader shuffle.
  • Your cards must be gifted to you or stolen.
  • Never use a used deck.
  • If your cards are lost, they needed a new owner.
