Save The Wolves!
In a decision dated December 19, 2014, U.S. District Judge Howell ruled that federal threatened status be restored to wolves in Minnesota and endangered status to wolves in Michigan, null Wisconsin and parts of North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.
The court ruled that the US Fish & Wildlife Service cannot designate the Great Lakes wolves as a Distinct Population, for the purpose of de-listing them. Wolves in the Great Lakes Region were de-listed January 2012 giving the states the authority to oversee wolf management.
Since that time, more than 1,500 Great Lakes wolves have been killed through recreational hunting and trapping resulting in a substantial reduction in wolf populations. This added human caused mortality constitutes a threat to the species. Scientific research shows that wolf populations self-regulate and hunting is not necessary to manage wolves.
Wolves are essential to a healthy eco-system. This has been proven by the re-introduction of wolves in Yellowstone National Park. Nothing shows this better than a National Geographic documentary entitled “How Wolves Change Rivers“.
A variety of bills designed to weaken the Endangered Species Act were introduced during the 113th Congress, but thankfully none were signed into law. But the newly installed 114th Republican Congress can destroy the December 2014 ruling by introducing new legislation based on the previous years bills.
We cannot allow this!
The legislative threat to wolves is real with legislation expected to be introduced in the US House this month. The measure to de-list wolves in the Great Lakes States will be co-sponsored by Congressman Dan Benishek (MI) Reid Ribble (WI) and Cynthia Lummis (WY) and would include the hunting and trapping of wolves.
Everyone concerned about our national wildlife must take action. Don’t simply like a post and think your job is done. Social media inaction will promote the death of many endangered species. You must actually do something!
Writing your Senator or Congressman is as easy as knowing your zip code. You don’t even have to wordsmith a letter. Feel free to copy the one I sent to my Virginia representatives. Click on the links below and your browser will open a new window where you can search for your representative on the Congressional websites.
Your representatives will have a contact form where you can fill out your name, address and the reason for your communication. Along with an area where you can copy the letter below, and paste it into the form. Make sure you update the name of your representative and sign it with your name at the end.
Remember, you get back what you put out. Do nothing and you’ll have nothing left to appreciate in our natural world. Take action and help save the wolf and all endangered species in our Wild America.

I’m writing today to plead with you to
PLEASE, DO NOT SPONSOR OR SUPPORT ANY LEGISLATION OR RIDER THAT WOULD:
Weaken The Endangered Species Act OR De-list Wolves Nationwide OR De-list Wolves in the Great Lakes Region.
When Wolves are present in the ecosystem, regions thrive. The Yellowstone wolf packs have proven this for years. The National Geographic shared a video about this that beautifully explains their impact. I encourage you to search for the video online at YouTube. It’s called “How Wolves Change Rivers”.
Thank you, for your time and attention on this matter.
