If you’re going to stand on your head for someone else, make sure you’re getting what you need out of the situation. No matter what the acquaintanceship is, all relationships are a two way street. Meeting halfway is necessary to maintain respect and consideration. If you’re always going the extra mile, it may not be the relationship for you. Try to work it out and make your concerns clear. But if nothing changes, it maybe time to move on and find something that IS good for you.
Additional Insight:
Relationships of any kind take work from both sides to make them successful and beneficial for everyone involved.
Whither it be at school, at work, between friends, or a close relationship between couples, all relationships take work to maintain. If you are constantly doing all the work and feel as though you’re the one who is being asked to change in order to accommodate the other; it’s not a healthy relationship.
But don’t simply give up and walk away with someone else holding the bag. Talk about it first. Try to communicate how you feel. Be respectful, show concern without anger or hurt feelings. Never start the conversation with “You made me….”. No one can make you think or feel anything unless YOU allow them too. Take ownership of your emotions. When you did this, I felt like that.
In today’s throw-away society people give up easily and toss out relationships because they’re “too hard” to deal with. If you want that perfect relationship, it’s going to take work….on both sides. You’re going to get angry at each other. You’re going to get down right mad at each other. And if you allow those situations that made you angry, hurt or mad to fester and build, you’re going to lose respect for each other (if you ever had it) and make it harder to work out the problems.
Any endeavor that requires a partnership also requires respect and consideration for the other person. But that doesn’t mean, losing respect for yourself. Make sure you understand where the happy medium is and balance the work, responsibility and everything else that goes into making the situation successful for everyone. Keeping the balance will work for you much better than simply keeping the peace.
