You can’t hide under the mushrooms and avoid the conflict stirring around you. Running away doesn’t solve the problem. In fact, today and this weekend, it could put you at a great disadvantage. Be calm, but speak up for yourself. Don’t let others try to bully you out of a position you worked hard to acquire.
Bullies always have ulterior motives. They want to push you around so they feel better about themselves. They don’t want to do the work that goes behind being dependable, they want others to do it for them. And if they can’t hover over your work, they fear the perception that they’re not doing a good job or getting things done.
When they stand on their own, they lose the courage to stand up for themselves. They always have henchmen doing their bidding. Don’t focus on the messengers, they’re not the real issue. Pay attention to the leader of the group and you’ll have more opportunity to put them in their place and off your back.
Saying nothing or letting them spin their wheels at your expense will only give them more influence over you and your efforts. It’s time to stand up for yourself and speak up against the injustice. You don’t have to be mean or out of control when you do. And make sure you follow the chain of command. Never go above someone elses head to get things resolved quicker. That will only back fire and put you in an awkward situation. It might take a little more time, but it will be worth the effort.
Try to approach the situation from the side of understanding and compassion. You don’t know what’s going in the world of the bully. Maybe they have been threatened in some way. Maybe they are on some form of probation and given the ultimatum to perform and show results. But they can’t do it at your expense, so don’t let them. There are always three sides to the story, yours, theirs and what’s really happening. So don’t go into this as if you’re facing a war, because it’s nothing more than a little argument.
The biggest weapon you have today and through the weekend is the ability to rise above and be calm. Explain your side from your point of view. Don’t place blame on others, no matter what has transpired. Take responsibility for your choices and explain why you made those decisions. By the end of the day, those that matter will be on your side and you will be perceived as the professional you are. Things may continue to play out through the weekend. But remember you must not get in a game of tit for tat. Be the adult and be the team player. By Monday things will have settled down tremendously, at least for your part in the play.
