July 27: Thaumatology, The Study of Miracles

Thaumatology (thau·ma·tol·o·gy) is the doctrine, discussion, or study of performing miracles. It comes from the Greek (thauma, “miracle”). And it first shows up in literature in the mid 1850s. It was primarily used to study the existence of miracles within the Catholic Church and it’s practices.

But over time and outside of Christendom it broadly became, the study of wonderworking; it is the theoretical analysis of the principles upon which the practice of magik is based. It has been used since the early 1970s, thanks to game designer Sean Punch, in role-playing games. And it gained even more favor in more recent times thanks to JK Rowling who uses the concept in her Harry Potter series.

But what exactly is Thaumatology? Is it real? Or is it made up to give credence to miracles or magik? How does one study Thaumatology? Where do you go, who do you talk to? What do you do with this information in the first place? Join us on the The Ænigma Project Monday night as we discuss this topic and try to answer these questions.
