Relationships aren’t all peaches and roses, you have to work at it. Pay attention to your thoughts today. Are you allowing your own frustrations with other situations to get in the middle of your most important relationship? Be careful you’re not letting things fester and infect something you rely on and have always wanted in your life. You could be throwing away something marvelous.
Even the best relationships have moments of hurt feelings, anger and irritation. Don’t allow today’s throw away society to destroy something you love, just because you think it’s not ideal. You’re not perfect, and you’re never going to be perfect. So stop holding someone else up to a perfect model that they’re never going to be able to live up to.
Relationships are a two-way street that require respect and consideration on both sides. Don’t hold someone else accountable for going against your wishes, if you’ve never told them what you need in the first place. If you can’t communicate what you need, or what you like, then how is someone else supposed to know? Use your words, calmly and without anger and hatefulness.
Sometimes the best thing you can do is shut up and walk away until you calm down. But never saying anything about how you felt, does a disservice to your partner. They can’t read your mind, anymore than you can read theirs. If you have a problem, you have to calmly speak up and explain your position. But never start that sentence with “You made me feel like”, no one can make you feel anything. Your emotions are your choice. You’re much better off starting that statement with, “When you did this, I felt like that” and take ownership of your own emotions.
All relationships are work. If you’re getting annoyed over all the little things someone does, and blowing them out of proportion in the scheme of things, then perhaps there’s a bigger problem at hand. But you’re not going to find out, unless you’re willing to speak up. The world isn’t here to cater to you. Life is about balance and that means it’s about the give and take in any relationship. Take some time to check what you’re bringing in the door and what you should be leaving outside your home. The person close to you is trying very hard to make you happy. Make sure you’re appreciating the gesture and putting in the same consideration for them.
